Dr Russell used an action research methodology to implement and evaluate mental health interventions in sporting clubs. She collaborated with Heather Ladson to write about the importance of the local football/netball clubs in rural communities.
Dr Russell undertook a qualitative research project to explore older women’s experiences of playing bridge.

The article “Staying well with bipolar disorder” was deemed one of the ten best articles published in Australia and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry in 2005.
